This month’s blog post was written by Thuy Chou, Senior Wealth Consultant, Investment Counsellor at Cidel.
When people hear the term “financial planning,” they often think it’s all about retirement. And while planning for retirement is certainly important, it’s just one part of a much bigger picture.
As a Senior Wealth Consultant and Investment Counsellor, I’ve had the privilege of guiding individuals and families through their financial journeys – some just starting out, others already well-established. What I’ve learned is that financial planning is for anyone who wants to feel more confident, more in control, and more intentional about their financial life.
Even with sufficient retirement savings, other aspects of financial planning play a vital role in protecting and enhancing your long-term financial well-being. And for those who are just beginning to think about their finances, what you do today will absolutely shape your tomorrow. For example, choosing between term and permanent insurance isn’t just about coverage—it’s a foundational decision in risk management that can have long-term implications.
A holistic financial plan is a personalized strategy designed not only to prepare you for the future but also to help you make the most of today. It integrates six core pillars that work together to support your overall financial well-being:
1. Financial Management
This is the foundation. It includes budgeting, cash flow analysis, debt management, and liquidity planning. Effective financial management ensures you’re living within your means, building emergency reserves, and making informed decisions about spending and saving.
Key questions:
· Are you tracking your income and expenses?
· Do you have a plan for managing debt and maintaining credit health?
2. Investment Management
Your investments should reflect your goals, risk tolerance, and time horizon. This pillar involves asset allocation, portfolio construction, and ongoing performance monitoring. It’s not just about returns—it’s about aligning your capital with your life’s ambitions.
Key questions:
· Is your portfolio diversified and tax-efficient?
· Are your investments aligned with short- and long-term goals?
3. Estate Planning
Estate planning ensures your assets are distributed according to your wishes and that loved ones are protected. It includes wills, powers of attorney, trusts, and beneficiary designations. For business owners or high-net-worth individuals, strategies like estate freezes or succession planning are essential.
Key questions:
· Do you have an up-to-date will and powers of attorney for property and personal care?
· Have you considered how to minimize tax obligations upon death, including estate administration tax (i.e., probate fees), and probate delays?
4. Risk Management
Life is unpredictable. Risk management protects you and your family from financial hardship due to illness, disability, death, or property loss. This includes insurance planning—life, health, disability, critical illness, and long-term care.
Key questions:
· Are you adequately insured?
· Have you reviewed your coverage as your life circumstances change?
5. Tax Planning
Tax planning isn’t just for April—it’s a year-round strategy. It involves optimizing income, deductions, credits, and timing to reduce your tax burden. For professionals and business owners, it may include corporate structures, income splitting, and charitable giving.
Key questions:
· Are you maximizing tax-advantaged accounts like RRSPs and TFSAs?
· Are you using strategies to defer or reduce taxes?
6. Retirement Planning
Yes, retirement is still a key piece. Retirement planning involves estimating future needs, projecting income sources, and creating withdrawal strategies. It’s about ensuring financial independence and lifestyle continuity.
Key questions:
· Do you know how much you’ll need to retire comfortably?
· Have you considered longevity risk and inflation?
· Have you planned for potential aging care needs, such as home support or long-term care?
Why Holistic Planning Matters
Each pillar is interconnected. A change in one area—like a career shift, inheritance, or health event—can ripple across your entire financial picture. That’s why holistic planning is essential. It’s not a one-time event but an ongoing process that adapts to your evolving life.
Whether you’re just starting out or refining an existing plan, I’m here to help you explore what’s possible and build a strategy that supports your goals—today, tomorrow, and beyond.
